Note from the Publishers
spacer (1K)
We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for the wonderful feedback we have received on the new 2009 Arizona Equine Resource Guide.  It is a hefty 140 pages, contains every horse resource and service you can imagine in Arizona, and includes a 2009 calendar full of horse events.  Don't forget that all of the resources are also on our website, where they are continually updated throughout the year.  The weather is wonderful, so even if you aren't showing or participating, it is a great time of year to get outside and do something different and horse-related.  Read below to learn about some interesting options coming up, with some that even benefit worthy horse charities.  And be sure to see Cavalia and the Lipizzaner Stallions while they are in Arizona in March!  ~ Cathleen & Rachel Prudhomme

Don't forget to submit news items for the March Equine E-News!  Use the form for submissions or send us a quick e-mail.

Large Animal Emergency Rescue Training, March 28-30, 2009.
spacer (1K)
Large Animal Emergency Rescue Training is coming to our state thanks to a joint effort between Large Animal Rescue Company, Arizona Equine Rescue Organization and Daisy Mountain Fire Department.  The goal is to increase the number of trained individuals to help horses that have fallen into water canals or swimming pools, have become stuck in mud holes, are victims of horse trailer accidents or experience some other unforeseen hazardous situation.

You can learn more about the course at
www.LargeAnimalRescue.com.  You can also email Soleil Dolce at AERO, or visit their website at www.AZEquineRescue.org

See Photos of the Horse Lovers Park Rally!
spacer (1K)
Paula Anderson, a professional equine photographer in Arizona, attended the rally along with an amazing number of people and horses both to support Horse Lovers Park and to photograph the phenomenal event.   She was personally struck by the VARIETY people, young and old, along with SO MANY DIFFERENT horses that came out that evening:  Quarter Horses, Arabians, Paints, Friesians, Miniature Horses, Rocky Mountain Horses, POA, Appaloosas and more!

Paula remarked, "We all know that sometimes different breeds and disciplines can become narrowly focused on their own area of interest.  Seeing everyone, regardless of their breed or riding specialty, coming together to support Horse Lovers Park was truly impressive.  There was a palpable feeling of hope, as people looked around, saw the wonderful mix of individuals, and realized that if we all pull together we CAN accomplish great things."  To the right is a photo that Paula took of Ross Libonati being interviewed by a TV station at the rally.

Paula grew up as the horse-crazy daughter of a professional photographer.  Fortunately, her father trusted her with expensive cameras and plenty of film at a young age.  She developed an "eye" for photography, and equine photography in particular.  She currently enjoys photographing horse shows, families, sale horses and capturing the horse-human bond in private photo sessions.  View the Horse Lovers Park rally photos and more on her website at www.PaulaAndersonPhoto.com.

Did You Know?  60% of a horse's body weight is muscle!
spacer (1K)
Karen Mitchell-Campbell, a Certified Equine Sports Massage Therapist, has heard on more than one occasion, "I don't ever get a massage, so why would I get my horse one?"  A misconception has developed that massage is a luxury, strictly for pampering purposes.  Webster's definition of massage is "the manipulation of tissues with the hand (or an instrument) for REMEDIAL or HYGIENIC purposes."  That said, it should be an integral part of treatment from a preventative standpoint, as well as the remedial point of view.

Benefits abound from massage!  It reduces muscular tension through the release of endorphins, opens up blood vessels, improves circulation and encourages the retention of phosphorous, sulphur and nitrogen necessary for tissue repair when recovering from bone fractures.  Massage also enhances muscle tone and increases the range of motion by improving the horse's nutrition through blood supply.  The list goes on and on.  The overwhelming evidence supporting massage should make us rephrase the initial question to "Can I afford NOT to get a massage?".
